CMS

• CMS JavaScript performance and perceived rendering improvements
• New dedicated “Add page” interface with page type descriptions
• Improved “Insert Link” dialog with cleaner styles
• Selected tabs and collapsed panels are now stored in a Cookie for a more consistent interface when returning later to the CMS

Framework

• Support for multi-byte page URLs (e.g. with German Umlauts). Flexible URL filtering through new URLSegmentFilter API
• Customisable HTML attributes on Form and FormField (which allows better usage of HTML5 and data attributes)

ORM

• New ORM has been further stabilised and API and documentation can be found at http://doc.silverstripe.org/sapphire/en/trunk/topics/datamodel

GridField

• GridField has been restructured and the new API and documentation can be found at http://doc.silverstripe.org/sapphire/en/trunk/topics/grid-field/
• CMS Asset admin implements a GridField for viewing files and folders

WordPress has had over 65 million downloads since version 3.0 was released, and in this third major iteration we’ve added significant polish around the new user experience, navigation, uploading, and imports. For Users

Experienced users will appreciate the new drag-and-drop uploader, hover menus for the navigation, the new toolbar, improved co-editing support, and the new Tumblr importer. We’ve also been thinking a ton about what the WordPress experience is like for people completely new to the software. Version 3.3 has significant improvements there with pointer tips for new features included in each update, a friendly welcome message for first-time users, and revamped help tabs throughout the interface. Finally we’ve improved the dashboard experience on the iPad and other tablets with better touch support.
For Developers

There is a ton of candy for developers as well. I’d recommend starting your exploration with the new editor API, new jQuery version, better ways to hook into the help screens, more performant post-slug-only permalinks, and of course the entire list of improvements on the Codex and in Trac.

Under the hood there have been a number of improvements, not the least of which is the streamlining enabled by our previously announced plan of retiring support for PHP4, older versions of MySQL, and legacy browsers like IE6, which allows us to take advantage of more features enabled by new technologies. The admin bar has a few more shortcuts to your most commonly-used actions. On the comment moderation screen, the new approve & reply feature speeds up your conversation management. You’ll notice in your first update after 3.2 that we’ll only be updating the files that have changed with each new release instead of every file in your WordPress installation, which makes updates significantly faster on all hosting platforms. There are also some fun new theme features shown off by Twenty Eleven, like the ability to have multiple rotating header images to highlight all of your favorite photos.

WordPress

It has been a big year for WordPress. If there were still some lingering doubts about its potency as a full-fledged content management system, then the full support for custom taxonomies and custom post types in WordPress 3.0 core should have put them to rest. WordPress 3.1 took those leaps one step further, polishing custom taxonomies with multi-taxonomy query support, polishing custom post types with native template support for archives and feeds, and introducing features (like the “admin bar”) that make it easier to quickly edit and add content from the front end.

Only last year in 2010 SilverStripe took home the NZ Open Source Award. The past year has huge growth in the SilverStripe project: the product has improved, the community in strengthening, and SilverStripe is being used to power more and more high profile websites. Oh yes it is also locally produced right here in Wellington.
